READING ROOM
The fragments on the map only represent certain areas of Paris because the map’s goal is ‘’the discovery of certain unities of atmosphere, of their main components and of their spatial localisation’’.
- Tom McDonough, Guy Debord and the Situationist International: Texts and Documents, 2002
When Guy Debord recreated a map of Paris in 1957, including on it only those places linked to the ‘’turns of direction taken by a subject moving through (their) surroundings’’, he was offering us the notion that there is no ‘’proper’’ reading of a map, and that a map is a ‘’narrative’’ rather than a ‘’tool of universal knowledge’’.
Just Around the Corner shows that our connections to others can be built and strengthened through the sharing of creative ideas. The project creates a network of shared narratives, not connected through the constructs of a map but through personal connection and exchange.
The Reading Room is a place where the curatorial team share writings and projects that inspired them to develop Just Around the Corner, finding connections to ideas, projects and works driven by a common interest.
